Twilight On The Trail

For the “We Pointed Them North” Western Art Show in December, I created this painting inspired by the book the show is based on. In the true life recollections of E.C. “Teddy Blue” Abbott, the narrative reads about cowpunchers often falling asleep on their horses due to pure exhaustion of riding all day and part of the night. My painting was meant to depict a cowpuncher riding herd at night under the romantic glow of moonlight. Although my original inspiration was the book, I’m more so inspired by the classic Frank Tenney Johnson nocturnals. I feel as if I could paint for a hundred years and never touch the theatrical illumination and magic of Johnson’s night scenes. Nevertheless, I’ll keep painting!
